England finally shows some batting resolve, as Crawley & Root set tourists up to win an unlikely victory

ZAK CRAWLEY, Joe Root managed to end England's winter of woes and set up a real chance for Antigua sunshine.

As the long-suffering Barmy army began to see some light, a brilliant second wicket partnership blossomed into brutal belligerence.

Since November's Gabba, England has been beaten like nine-pins.

Crawley and Root, however, showed the determination and resolve that was lacking in England's unbroken stand for 193 runs to bring England to 217-1. England is now leading by 153.

Crawley's second unbeaten Test ton in his 19th match was a triumphant display of determination and conviction.

There were some nervy moments, especially in the beginning.

Crawley was able to control anything that veered towards his legs, and stood and delivered 14 fours. He then climbed up and finished on 117.

Root was even more persuasive, finishing a rain-shortened day at 84. This put Root above Kevin Pietersen, and just behind Sir Alistair Cook's 33.

England will be hoping for more before lunch but they won't have elbow victory Mark Wood to push for victory.

Except for Alex Lees, the debut boy, it was perfect. The morning was set up by Kemar Roach, and followed by a great afternoon.

Jayden Seales was defeated by Jack Leach's forward lunge to hit Jayden in the middle with the third ball of today. The Windies won the match for 375. This is a 64-point lead.

Lees returned to the hutch in no time, only six minutes after he had played around his front foot.

For a total of 10, there were two innings. Roach had twice been out. Test cricket is now open.

Root was initially cautious, but he eventually came in. Crawley, who is so strong off his pads also seemed to thrive, despite any signs that the pitch might be misbehaving.

Crawley was becoming more composed and went to his 50. His only conversion was with his 267 against Pakistan in Southampton 2020. He converted exactly 100 balls by tucking Roach into his leg side.

Root quickly completed his 54th half century as he left Veerasammy permaul square behind him for the fourth boundary.

One scare was made, but replays revealed that the bat-pad appeal against Crawley on 71 failed with the ball hitting the ground first.

It was a relentless accumulation, as England extended the lead before the rain forced an earlier cut.
