Stokes began to cut a frustrated figure as the umpires conferred with one another.
They eventually let play resume after some of the dozens of ladybirds flew away.
That was much to the relief of a frustrated Stokes, who was making his frustrations known.
Cricket fans at home couldn’t quite believe their eyes and took to social media to express their shock.
One wrote on X: “Ladybirds stopped play between India and England, maybe a first in cricket?
“Cricket gives everything to its viewers, I can say.”
Another said: “Ladybirds taking over the match.”
And another said: “You can’t tell me this isn’t the perfect sport.”
The eagerly anticipated series is currently level at one win apiece.
Day one of the ladybird disrupted third test ended with Brendan McCullum’s England being 251/4.
