The 27-year-old was batting when the injury occurred after reverse-sweeping Chris Woakes onto the top of his own foot.

Pant was unable to walk properly and needed to be seen by the on-side medical team while still on the pitch.

He soon removed his show to reveal heavy swelling and was subsequently taken off the pitch in a golf buggy and forced to retire hurt.

Pant looked gutted as he was driven off the field, but was uplifted by a huge applause from the crowd in Manchester.

The injury will be a huge blow for India with Pant one of their biggest threats, having already notched 37 runs from 48 bowls before getting hurt.

Fans online were sending the IPL ace messages of support online as soon as he had gone off injured.

One wrote: “Hoping it’s not a serious injury for Rishabh Pant.”

While another added: “Rishabh Pant can’t even walk. That looked horrible. Get well soon man.”

And a third posted: “That’s nasty injury… wishing him a quick recovery”.

That number makes him the first wicketkeeper in history to score over 1,000 runs in away Tests.
