ENGLAND all-rounder Tom Curran is quitting red-ball cricket for his physical and mental health.

The Surrey star, 27, has not ruled out a future return but says recent injuries have forced his hand.

He said: “The last couple of years have not been easy. I have had a lot of time and this isn’t a decision I’ve taken lightly.

“Some choices in life you will never be 100 per cent sure with and this is definitely one of those. But it is the right decision for my body and for my mental health.

“Until I feel 100 per cent committed and confident in my body to be performing day in and day out for Surrey in the County Championship, putting all my time and focus into our Vitality Blast campaign is the right thing to do.”

Curran, brother of England star Sam, has played two England Tests, 28 ODIs, recently featured for ILT20 side Desert Vipers and will join up with Pakistan Super League side Islamabad United this month.

Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart said: “I fully support the decision.”

Curran has two England Test caps but has featured in 61 First Class matches for Surrey since joining in 2013.

He has 195 wickets in the format and has scored 1,367 runs.

But he has had more success with the white ball and has featured more regularly for England’s ODI and T20 teams.

He was part of England’s T20 team that reached the World Cup semi-final in 2021.
