AUSSIE former cricketer Ryan Campbell is fighting for his life after suffering a heart attack on Saturday.

The 50-year-old was rushed to intensive care after the incident occurred in a Stoke-on-Trent playground, where he had taken his two kids.

Campbell, who coaches the Netherlands national team, remains unresponsive in intensive care – having been given CPR by a passerby prior to being taken to hospital.

Aussie radio presenter Gareth Parker delivered the news this morning.

He said: “I have some very sad news that I need to share with you this morning and it concerns one of our favourite cricketing sons.

“Former WA and Australian cricketer Ryan Campbell who I am certain you will remember for his swashbuckling batting, he basically invented the ramp shot, and his athletic wicket-keeping.

“And many would remember him for his fantastic work in the media post his cricket career.

“This news is a real shock to his family and friends… many of those family and friends Ryan Campbell caught up with just last week when he was here in Perth.”

Parker added: “It is late at night right now in the UK and Cambo’s going to spend another night in an induced coma and they will try to bring him out of it again tomorrow.

“I saw him last week and he looked fit as a fiddle.

“We’ve heard way too much about heart problems and cricket in the last few weeks.”

Campbell currently resides in the Netherlands for work, but was over in the UK visiting family for the Easter weekend when he suffered the incident.

Aussie cricket was rocked last month by the sudden passing of Shane Warne aged 52 from a heart attack.

Rod Marsh also died of a heart attack in March aged 74.

WA Cricket CEO Christina Matthews led the best wishes sent to Campbell.

She said: “WA Cricket is in shock to hear of Ryan’s medical emergency after suffering a major heart attack over the long weekend.

“On behalf of all WA Cricket staff, players and the wider cricket community, I would like to pass on our heartfelt thoughts to Ryan, his wife Leontina and their family at this time.

“We know he is in the best care, and hope he pulls through and is able to make a full and speedy recovery.”
