Edgbaston is one of England’s most famous Ashes venues

It is also one of England‘s regular stadiums for a home Ashes series.

Now it is set to be modernised as a proposal to replace the Priory and Raglan Stands with a new facility and a 146-bed four-star hotel has been submitted.

The hotel will include pitch-facing balconies, as well as a gym, restaurant, bar and coffee shop – all of which would be open on non-match days.

However, on game days only those with a ticket or hospitality access will be permitted in the restaurant and bar.

There will also be a new roof terrace providing a view of the Birmingham skyline.

Plans to plant new trees have also been laid out to add to the “leafy” Edgbaston area, while improvements will also be made to better accommodate those with disabilities.

A statement read: “The existing stands are coming towards the end of their designed lifespan, creating an opportunity to build something truly special at Edgbaston.

“The proposed new stand will include a new concourse with enhanced food and drink options, plus improved facilities for disabled spectators.

“The new four-star hotel will be a unique feature to the site, providing one-of-a-kind pitch-side spectator and hospitality facilities, as well as a roof terrace that provides views of the Birmingham skyline.

“In providing a new hotel for spectators and visitors to the area, the proposal hopes to bring new jobs and opportunities to the area.

“The proposal aims to continue the masterplan vision. In delivering a new premium hotel alongside hotel, leisure and accessible spectator facilities, the development will continue to raise the standard the wider Edgbaston Masterplan, creating a vibrant economic centre around the stadium and delivering lasting investment for the local community.”

It is understood the development would generate around £4.3million each year.

It would also create 65 new jobs – as well as 160 roles in construction for every year the development takes to complete.
