But fans were left astounded after England captain Buttler made a huge blunder on a review.
In the third ball from the 16th over of the innings, Liam Livingstone was bowling against Glenn Phillips.
Livingstone’s bowl was defended by Phillips right in front of the stumps with the ball hitting the toe end of the bat.
However, Buttler thought the bowl had hit his pads instead, waving his hand in the air before calling for a review upstairs.
And on review, it was clear Buttler’s assertion was very wrong.
Buttler, 32, cast an embarrassed smile when he saw the replay of the call on the big screen.
England went on to comprehensively win the game by seven wickets, but fans were left fuming with the wasted call from the wicket-keeper.
On commentary, a BBC pundit declared it was “one of the all-time terrible reviews”, and fans seemed to agree.
Taking to Twitter, Specsavers joked: “Trying to get through to him now.”
A fan said: “I thought he was having a laugh with the batsman.”
“That was dreadful,” declared a second fan.
A third wrote: “A review that bad I think England should have been forced to forfeit the match and NZ given the automatic win.”
While another added: “I think they only did it for a laugh!”
